Tourist place in San Francisco: Golden Gate Bridge

My travel guide to North America continues with the San Francisco city travel guide.  When visiting San Francisco, it’s impossible not to notice  the Golden Gate Bridge.

Although we can always find plenty of tourist attractions in San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge will always be the city’s landmark.

• The suspension bridge that connects San Francisco Peninsula with Sausalito (a small city in Marin County) was named after the Golden Gate strait, that it crosses.
• At the time of its construction in 1937, the bridge was considered the largest suspension bridge in the world. It was built in spite of long debates and negotiations, incorporating original technologies and establishing new levels of security standards.
• The bridge is 2.7 km long, over 200 meters high, it carries six lanes of U.S Route 101 and allows pedestrians and bicycles.
• Due to its architectural style, size and geographical setup, the Golden Gate Bridge is considered one of the most photographed bridges in the world.
• The color of the painting (International Orange) was chosen primarily for security reasons – it increases the bridge’s visibility during the foggy summer days of San Francisco – but the aesthetics result is even more rewarding.
